Recently I've been meeting a lot of people. Making an effort to introduce myself to bring out different conversations and possibly form new friendships.
What seems to always come up is their preconception of me before I even open my mouth. I reach out my hand to say "Hi" or wave and I get a "Hey girl" with an exaggerated head roll and bump in the their hip to the side. On top of that they are loud like I'm not an arm reach away. What the hell?
And the list of stupid reactions to my black skin goes on. Here are my top 3 problems I have with you:
- When I open my mouth you're shocked that I speak intelligently about topics you think are beyond my scope of interest. Fun fact about me; I majored in Computer Science, I love to read up on anything dealing with technology.
- My social media skills go beyond reality tv. I'm not bashing any reality shows I can see why they are entertaining but please keep me out of those conversations. I'm not interested. (You may catch me in the audience on a talk show it's only b/c I was paid aka side hustle.)
- When we speak you don't have to say "Hey girl" and then snap your fingers when that's not your normal vernacular or behavior. I am fully capable of responding to a simple "Hi, how are you?"
Be yourself when you're around me and other black girls we are smarter than you think.
